AI that understands sport

We teach machines to watch the game.

Erlan Labs builds AI that follows a match the way a coach does. Our first product brings line calls and smash speed to badminton venues using cameras installed in the gym. Our research is working towards a model that understands the whole game.

Smash speed —
Illustration of a rally as Erlan sees it: cameras track the shuttle in 3D, measure the smash and call the close ones.

Product For venues

Broadcast-grade line calls, without the broadcast budget.

Professional line-calling systems cost tens of thousands of dollars per tournament. Erlan delivers it for a fraction of the cost, using a few cameras installed in your gym, so every match on every court gets line calling, smash speed and other AI insights.

Line calls

Was it in?

Every landing is placed on the court in 3D and called IN or OUT, with a replay of the moment the shuttle touched down.

Smash speed

How fast was that?

The shuttle is tracked from the moment it leaves the racket, so every smash comes with its real speed.

  1. 01

    Install once

Cameras are mounted in the gym, covering each court. Players have nothing to carry or set up.

  2. 02

    Just play

The system recognises when a rally starts and ends, and ignores shuttles from neighbouring courts.

  3. 03

    See every call

Line calls and smash speeds for every rally, with replays of the close ones, ready when you step off court.

Research Where we're headed

An AI that understands sport.

Line calls and speeds are measurements. Our long-term goal is understanding. We are working towards a model that watches a match and understands it the way a great coach does: who hit what, why a rally was won, the strategy behind each point, what shot you should have played instead, and how a player's game is changing over time. Not just what happened, but the nuances that decide matches.

Badminton is where we start. The same approach carries over to any sport with a ball, a court and a set of rules.

Questions we'll be able to answer

  • Where am I losing most of my points?
  • Which rallies turned the second game?
  • What does my opponent do when I lift to their backhand?
  • What should I have played instead of that cross-court drop?
  • Is my backhand clear getting deeper this season?
  • How do our doubles rotations break down under pressure?
